Quinn – ‘Catacombs’ Crochet Project

Does anyone else do this??

This is a rabbit hole. What’s a rabbit hole? It’s a distraction that leads to other distractions that lead to more distractions, and sometimes you get a really good result out of all the distractions, or at least learn something new! In the case of this fandom, I’ve found that Adam plays some very fascinating characters that have led me down a few excellent rabbit holes. That being so, this is the first of several ‘rabbit hole’ posts. Quinn has inspired me a lot, so I’ll stick with him for a while.

I’ll be honest, I’ve found that many of Adam’s characters end up with either unresolved endings (did Buckley ever find true love???) or very sparse backstories (What the heck was Quinn doing for twelve years? How did he start The Demimonde??). The good news about things like that is that we get to fill in the blanks with all kinds of fanfic and meta and analysis and just…delve. Sometimes it leads to even more than that. Sometimes you just have to ‘do the thing’. Enter the ‘Catacombs crochet project’!

I’m an avid crocheter, especially mosaic crochet, so when I saw this pattern on one of the Facebook crochet groups I belong to I was immediately drawn to it. Imagine my delight at finding Sixel Design had a whole pattern pack of these designs called ‘The Catacombs? It had to be fate. I mean, look at these! I was imagining pillows with neon skulls here and there around The Demimonde. SO fitting for an underground nightclub situated down in the Paris catacombs. Quinn sure did like his dramatic hodge podge of styles, colors, art, and people. Anything (and everything) goes! Quinn also had his soft and lovey side…or maybe that’s just me being romantic…but I also wanted to make a set of more romantic, sweet skulls to reflect that. Instead of neon on black, maybe some soft pinks, lavender, heathery gray with passionate reds and purples thrown in?

I have my pattern, so now to go yarn shopping. I do most of my yarn shopping on Hobbii these days and found the perfect yarn for the neon colors! That was easy! Now for the romantic colors…not so easy! These are made using a technique called ‘mosaic crochet’ and there needs to be some contast between the two colorways in order to see the pattern. Easy with neon on black, not so much with softer colors. I want subtle color change so I think I might go with Twister yarn by Hobbii. Which two though? I already have a few of these in my yarn stash. Then I have the problem of how many pillows do I want to make? What sizes? Do I want a throw to go with them? Maybe crochet some French phrases in on some of them. I need to learn some French…

Now you see where things start to get out of hand. 😁

Once I get colors picked out and acquired, I’ll post progress updates along the way. If there’s any more crocheters out there that want to make Quinn-inspired Catacombs pillows and more, feel free to tag us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with your own makes, or just reach out to chat. I’m always happy to talk about both Adam Nagaitis AND crochet so bring it on! Maybe learn something new down the rabbit hole?
