Private Buckley

“There is only so much contempt a man can take.”

Private Buckley is a soldier guarding the convicts of the first penal colony in Australia. Buckley’s fellow soldiers and the convicts despise him, and the young Buckley lashes out in anger and resentment. At first Buckley appears to be deceitful, selfish, and petty, but it is soon revealed that he suffers from a deep sense of self-loathing and loneliness and struggles to be a better person.
